What’s with circling before lying down?

Stanley Coren is a psychologist who’s an expert in dog behaviour, and he decided to get to the bottom of why some dogs walk around in small circles before settling down. Stanley tested 62 dogs on various surfaces to see what kind of behaviour they demonstrated before lying down and found that if the surface was uneven like shag carpeting, or a slanting couch, they were three times more likely to spin in at least one circle before they settled comfortably. Stanley believes that confirms they’re simply trying to get comfortable.

Other parts of the theory suggest that this behaviour is also hardwired into them from their wild days, and that the circling is partially; scaring away any bugs that might bite, moving away any sharp rocks or sticks, and making the ground more suitable for snoozing.

Tippy usually doesn’t spin before she lays down, even on the slanted couch or cushy bed. She will once in a great while, so I’m not sure what triggers it.
